The Zimmerman Verdict

by Phil Huckelberry There’s a man free in Florida today. He’s a stupid man, a racist, a product of the culture which surrounds him, a culture which made him feel scared by a young black man and yet emboldened by a small black gun. If all of the people who are furious about one verdict would step back and redirect their energy toward confronting  the culture, we would all be better off. But it sure feels like that’s too hard. It’s a lot easier to decry racism generally without confronting one’s own tendencies. It’s a lot easier to “blame Florida” as though…

REVIEW: Gasland Part II on HBO July 8

Originally published by Ladybud by Carl Romanelli Josh Fox a filmmaker from Eastern Pennsylvania was in the state mid-June to debut his follow-up to the groundbreaking documentary, Gasland, Gasland Part II. The Capitalist Infesto

A shortened version for presentation at the University of Havana on Friday, June 28th 2013, at the “Seminar on Socialist Renewal and the Capitalist Crisis: A Cuban-North American Exchange” by Mitchel Cohen I dedicate this talk to our comrade and teacher John “Tito” Gerassi, who died last year, and who remained to the end a true friend of the Cuban revolution. Straight Arrow Watches You

by Jennifer Sullivan past co-chair of Green Party of Florida & Florida delegate to the Green Party National Committee “You better watch out where you go and watch out who you know. Watch what you do, because Straight Arrow watches you.” Why should good law abiding American citizens worry about the NSA compiling every single e mail, phone call or social network that you and every OTHER good (or not so good) American writes, makes or participates in? If you are not doing anything wrong, you don’t have to worry, right? Hmm..that depends. Who decides what is “wrong”? Do you…

The Tar Sands Pipeline

by Scott McLarty Z Magazine June 2013 Bill McKibben says we don’t have time to challenge two-party rule and build an alternative like the Green Party. In reality, we don’t have time not to. Those of us who participated in the #ForwardOnClimate Rally against the tar-sands pipelines in Washington, DC on February 17, witnessed the environmental movement at its best and worst. Tens of thousands turned out in freezing weather to demand that President Obama kill the proposal for the Keystone XL and Enbridge pipelines that, if approved, will route highly polluting crude oil from the Alberta tar sands through…
