Seize The Time

Every time we view the news in the paper or on television or the internet, we are struck by the tragic politics of our country’s leaders. This, along with the epidemic of violence, poverty, racism and injustice, environmental destruction and war, is evil and oppressive. Dr. King stated, “First, non-violence is resistance to evil and oppression. It is a human way to fight back.” At sixteen, I was ten feet from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. when he gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. The problem today is that too much of America is still dreaming. Today, far too…

Other Revolving Doors

by Don Fitz July 13, 2018 It’s more than doors between the US government and the businesses that they supposedly regulate that go round and round. One of the other swinging doors is between the Democratic and Republican Parties. A second door Perhaps the best known case is when Al Gore ran for president in 2000, he picked Joe Lieberman as his running mate. Then, in 2008, Lieberman showed up at the Republican national convention to endorse John McCain for president. Between those two campaigns, John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, was rumored to be leaning to ask Republican…

Propping up the economy is not a good justification for immigration

Andrea Mérida Cuéllar June 29, 2018 Since the Trump administration has been caught red-handed violating the human rights of people fleeing economic and political upheaval in Central America via child separations at the border, I have noticed a few well-meaning folks trying to combat the naked white supremacy demonstrated by those who are ok with Trump’s actions. According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, their names were Matrouk al Saleh and his wife, Bashar al-Saleh, Yasser Shaker Al Ismail and Abdul Qadir Shaker Al Ismail. I’m guessing…

Oops, Herod, you will miss again

myCentralJersey.com By Seth Kaper-Dale January 10, 2018 The season of Epiphany is upon us. In churches coming out of the Roman Catholic or Protestant traditions, this day is about God being made manifest to the gentiles. The focal story of Epiphany is the story of the arrival of the Magi (star-gazers from the East (“from the Moab”), who travel to Judah because they see some sort of a star configuration that suggested a royal birth. There is a lot about this story that I love. Firstly, astrology was scoffed at in the Hebrew scriptures (Isaiah 47:13) and maybe even outlawed…
