WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Green Party is delivering an Earth Day message to Bernie Sanders’ supporters: Green are preparing to welcome all those who want to maintain the political revolution that Mr. Sanders’ campaign represents if Hillary Clinton wins the Democratic nomination.

The Democratic primary results in New York on April 19 have given Ms. Clinton a lead that will be very difficult for Mr. Sanders to surpass.

“As Naomi Klein and others have noted, Hillary Clinton’s pro-corporate worldview and deep ties to Wall Street and Big Oil suggest that a Clinton Administration won’t be capable of taking necessary action against climate change — the global crisis of the 21st century,” said Audrey Clement, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States and co-chair of the party’s Eco-Action Committee. (See links below)

Greens have closely watched Mr. Sanders’ campaign, which has proved that millions of Americans want a drastic change in the country’s direction. They’re inviting disappointed Sanders supporters, if he loses the nomination, to go Green and help build a permanent alternative party that rejects corporate contributions and can compete with the two major parties in national, state, and local elections.

Greens are especially encouraging “Bernie Or Bust” voters to vote Green, instead of writing in Mr. Sanders’ name or refusing to vote in the general election.

Several candidates are competing for the Green Party’s presidential nomination, which will take place at the Green national convention in Houston, Texas, August 4-7, one week after the Democratic convention. “Voters have seen how the major-party nomination and election processes are rigged, through irregularities at the polls and mechanisms like the Democrats’ superdelegate system, which was designed to block candidates like Bernie Sanders. We’re also seeing deep fractures in the GOP. Polls are showing widespread desire for alternatives to the two major parties,” said Andrea Mérida Cuéllar, co-chair of the Green Party and and organizer of the party’s Latinx Caucus (http://www.gp.org/caucuses_affinity_groups#latinx).

Green Party leaders said 2016 might turn out to be the best year for alternative parties in nearly a century.

“The lesson of 2016 is that even strong progressive Democratic challengers like Bernie Sanders will always run up against a brick wall,” said Margaret Flowers, Maryland Green candidate for the U.S. Senate (http://www.flowersforsenate.org). “Progressives will always see their agenda rejected and their votes taken for granted by the Democratic leadership.”

“Instead of trying to rescue the Democratic Party from corporate money and influence every election year, it’s time to put our time, energy, and resources into a party for young people, for working people and the poor, for people of color, for all those who care about the health of Planet Earth and future generations. That’s the Green Party’s Earth Day message to Bernie supporters and to everyone who’s no longer content with only two parties,” said Dr. Flowers.
